# GivEnergy Insight 1.4.0 — Synology user guide

## What the Synology edition does

The NAS runs the local inverter service continuously, even when no browser is
open. Any authorised user can open the dashboard through DSM from a desktop,
tablet or phone browser. The current package is monitoring-only and does not
write inverter registers.

**GivEnergy Insight — understand, analyse and monitor your entire energy system
without changing it.**

Open GivEnergy Insight from the DSM menu or use the direct DSM URL. The app first
checks the current DSM browser session. If no valid session is available, sign in
with a DSM account allowed to use the package. A verification code can be entered
when DSM two-factor authentication is enabled.

Credentials are sent to the NAS through Synology's authentication API and are
not stored by GivEnergy Insight.

## Add a dummy inverter

Use this first to verify the installation without touching real hardware:

1. Open **Settings**.
2. Choose **Dummy**.
3. Give the simulator a name and add it.
4. Confirm live solar, home, grid and battery values change.

Dummy data is labelled as simulated and is safe for testing dashboards, graphs,
widgets and Smart View.

## Connect a local inverter

1. Make sure the NAS and inverter dongle are on the same routed private network.
2. Open **Settings → Local**.
3. Choose **Scan this network**.
4. Select the detected inverter.
5. If discovery finds nothing, enter the inverter's private IP address manually.

Only one direct local monitor may be able to use inverter port `8899` at a time.
If connection fails, temporarily stop GivTCP or another direct Modbus integration.

## Use optional GivEnergy Cloud access

Cloud access is optional and requires internet access and a compatible
GivEnergy account/API token:

1. Open **Settings → Cloud**.
2. Paste a read-only GivEnergy API token.
3. Refresh the Cloud device list.
4. Select the inverter to monitor.

The token is stored in the restricted package data directory on the NAS. Remove
Cloud access from Settings when it is no longer needed.

## Multiple inverters

Saved inverters appear in Settings. Select the active inverter to choose which
system supplies dashboard and statistics data. Only one direct local connection
is active at a time.

## Dashboard

The Overview page shows:

- Current solar generation
- Household demand
- Grid import or export
- Battery state and power
- Live power flow
- Active inverter status
- Custom energy widgets

Use **Edit widgets** to show, hide, reorder and resize available widgets.

## Statistics

Statistics compares generation, consumption, grid reliance, self-sufficiency and
battery performance. The NAS can continue collecting local history while the
browser is closed, provided the package and inverter connection remain active.

Choose Today, 3 days, 7 days, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year or All to change the
reporting period. Recent high-resolution samples are complemented by compact
daily summaries retained for long-term comparisons. A newly installed package
builds this archive from the day it starts; it cannot recreate older local data
that the NAS never recorded.

## System explorer and parallel inverters

System shows the active inverter's PV strings, temperatures, output, EPS status,
battery modules, cell-voltage spread, meters and phases. It also displays
configured charge and discharge slots as read-only information.

The plant overview combines the latest timestamped reading from each saved
inverter. This is useful for parallel and AC-coupled systems, while still making
the age and source of each reading visible. Select an inverter to refresh its
direct details.

## Health, alerts and insights

Health & Alerts watches data freshness, grid voltage and frequency, inverter and
battery temperatures, and battery cell spread. Warnings are monitoring guidance,
not a substitute for an installer or electrician.

Insights estimates import cost, avoided import, export value and net energy
benefit from the configured tariff. Weather-aware observations remain advisory:
GivEnergy Insight never changes battery, charge, discharge or export settings.

Use **Download CSV report** to save the selected Statistics period for your own
records or further analysis.

## Smart View

Smart View is designed for a wall-mounted tablet or full-screen display. It can
show Live Data Flow, Power Graph, Energy Graph, Battery Graph, EV Charger, Smart
Tariff and Weather Forecast widgets.

Choose **Full screen** in Smart View for the browser's full-screen display.
Browser permission may be required the first time.

## Smart features

In Settings you can configure:

- Smart Tariff (Legacy) rates and time window
- Weather location
- EV charger demonstration where no supported charger is available
- Smart View

Use **Save Changes** after editing Smart feature settings.

These settings change only how GivEnergy Insight calculates and displays
monitoring information. They do not alter the inverter.

## Battery and EV branches

Battery and EV Charger branches in Live Data Flow can be turned on or off from
the controls at the top of the widget. This only changes the visual layout.

## Remote use

The NAS continues reading the local inverter. When you connect to DSM remotely,
the browser reads the already-running NAS service, so the inverter itself is
never exposed to the internet. Follow `REMOTE-ACCESS.md` and use HTTPS or a VPN.

The DSM edition includes **Remote Access** in the sidebar:

1. Choose HTTPS.
2. Enter the Synology DDNS hostname or public address.
3. Enter the external port that forwards to DSM HTTPS port `5001`.
4. Save the setup, then copy, test or open the generated link.

The page stores only the address settings in that browser. It does not store DSM
credentials or modify the router, DSM firewall, certificate or DDNS settings.
QuickConnect addresses are rejected because Synology does not relay third-party
package routes through QuickConnect.

## Package data and logs

Private settings, history and logs are stored under the DSM package data
directory. The service log is:

```text
/var/packages/GivEnergyInsight/var/givenergy-insight.log
```

Logs may contain local IP addresses and inverter serial numbers. Review them
before sharing and never publish API tokens or DSM credentials.
